As a business owner, one of the most important things to know is how you can keep your employees productive. You may take a peek at them from your office door from time to time and they’ll show you how busy they are. But there’s a vast difference between being merely busy and being productive. To be busy means that you have multiple things to do. On the other hand, being productive means that you are getting stuff done. So, how do you make sure that your employees are productive? This might seem a bit funny but you can achieve this by constantly giving corporate rewards. You’ll know why pretty soon. 

How Is Corporate Rewards Related To Productivity?

At first glance, productivity at work seems like something that only the company owner would benefit from. After all, he is the one reaping all the financial gains from the fruitful efforts of the employees. 

But there are studies pointing to the fact that higher productivity leads to happier employees which in turn lead to more productivity. 

When an employee isn’t productive, you can bet that work just piles up continuously. If this is the situation of the employee, what happens is he gets drained so easily due to the amount of work that he always has to do. There is no feeling of accomplishment. As a result, the employee is unhappy. 

And since the employee is unhappy, he has little motivation to do good work on his future tasks. 

Now, let’s say that you’ve just started applying corporate rewards into your work system. The outcome is that aside from the good package deal you’ve given your employees, you’ve also included some added corporate perks that allow them to eat a fancy meal with their family or go to the beach under the expenses of the company. 

Your employees are happier and since they have lots of energy, they are capable of getting things done. They are not busy because they are productive. They feel accomplished. They are happy. The cycle repeats. 

Now, here’s the better question: does corporate rewards need to always be about restaurants, fancy destinations, or coupons? 

Having these things would be good but corporate rewards are more effective when you are able to give something intangible to your people. As we’ve said, this could refer to the feeling of accomplishment or the feeling of being part of a bigger mission. It is the sense of purpose that you are able to give your employees. 

How To Increase Employee Productivity

Now that we’ve laid out the groundwork for corporate rewards and productivity, let us look into the possible steps that you can take to give employees tangible and intangible corporate rewards. 

Smart Workflows

The great thing about smart workflows is that they benefit employees and employers both ways. On one hand, the work of the employee becomes so much easier and can be done with little time. On the other hand, the employer receives the output much faster at a higher quality. 

This isn’t something that’s easy to do. You won’t accomplish this in just a couple of sit downs. It is a constant process. But one thing you can start with is prioritization. 

When bosses give out urgent tasks in all directions, employees feel scattered. They don’t know what task they should start with. They get confused. They get stressed. A stressed employee won’t usually be able to deliver high-quality work the way you expect them to. 

So, it would be a good idea to set prioritizations. In a single week, maybe you could give them 5 priorities and then some minor tasks. The goal is to complete the first priority tasks first and then he can start doing the minor tasks. Let the employee know that it is alright to not tick out all of the minor tasks. 

Deep Work

People who haven’t gotten a lot of experience managing people tend to think that by telling employees to multitask, they are helping them become more productive because it means that the employees are able to do things all at once. 

But this kind of strategy is rarely effective. For one thing, a person can only focus on one thing at a specific time. That is if you want to retain good quality work. 

Multitasking is effective for completing multiple tasks but it is not the best method for people who want to deliver qualified results. 

Curate a system that encourages people to focus on the quality of the task instead of the quantity. For instance, in the first 25 minutes of the employee’s shift, the worker should focus on one task. And then after the 25 minutes has lapsed, he can take a 10-minute break. Repeat. 

You’ll find that working in this way will encourage employees to focus on the quality of the work. Even though it seems that the entire work takes more time, look at it in the long-term and you’ll see a significant increase in productivity. 

Encourage Writing Down To-Dos

These days, one can simply use a mobile app or computer software to create a list of tasks to do for the day. While there is most certainly nothing wrong with this, a more effective method would be to use a pen and notebook. 

Externalizing one’s objectives is sort of a warm up for the mind. When you do this, you are preparing your brain to get to work. 

We have so many thoughts in a day. Somehow, we are always distracted. At certain times, this makes it a challenge to focus and get to work at the right time. 

We recommend that you encourage your employees to write down their goals in a single workday as a daily routine. By doing so, they are able to set the atmosphere for work time. 

They will immediately notice that after they have written their goals and objectives for the day that they are more inclined to get to work whereas in the past, they could be tempted to browse social media first before diving into their tasks. 

Another great thing about writing down one’s goals for the day is that you no longer have to think about what tasks to do next. This means that after you’re finished with one task, you can immediately shift to your next task. With that, no time is wasted. Employees finish work a lot faster. 

Of course, all of these incorporations will not give you long-term results if they don’t stick to your employees. So, always remember to reiterate these new work standards of behavior. Change is challenging to anyone but with a bit of encouragement on your end, you could significantly transform the direction of your business for the long haul.
